Babysitting Scares

Babysitting is a very fun way to make money. I love playing with kids, so I have always preferred babysitting over a retail job or working in a restaurant. I have babysat kids in my neighborhood, family friends, and my little cousins. Although babysitting has been fun, there have been some scary moments.

When I was around thirteen years old, I was asked to watch three kids in my neighborhood for a few hours while the parents were out to dinner. They had a younger boy who was three years old at the time and two girls who were five and seven. The girl who was five years old, Anna, was putting her fingers in her mouth all night so I asked her what she was doing. She replied, “My tooth is wiggly.” I told her I would help her pull out her baby tooth, but she was too scared.

After a few hours of playing barbie and cars, Anna decided she had to go to the bathroom. I was waiting in the kitchen making some snacks for the kids when I heard screams of “BLOOD!! BLOOD!!” coming from the bathroom. I ran to the bathroom to find Anna crying and reaching her bloody hands out to me. “We have to call 911” She cried. The two other kids started crying too, probably thinking her sister was going to die. I tried calming them down as much as I could, which took a long time. I explained to all of them that it was normal to bleed when you lose your baby teeth and they started feeling a little better.

Another family I babysat for was my cousins. They have two boys who are six and eight and a girl who is four. I babysit for them often, but last summer I had a bad experience babysitting with them. Me and the kids were all playing in their playroom which was pretty messy, as usual. We were playing with plastic dinosaurs, helicopters and little toy cars. I was playing with the girl in the corner when I saw something painful happen out of the corner of my eye. The oldest child, John, was running around with a dinosaur in his hand when he tripped on his brothers foot and fell to the ground. He started sobbing quietly, trying to act tough, but by the look on his face I could tell he was in pain. I went up to him to see what was wrong and I was shocked. He pulled his hand away from his knee and there was a very deep cut that was bleeding. He had fallen on the edge of a toy helicopter, which had completely sliced his knee open. I quickly grabbed a towel and put pressure on his knee until his mom came home to take him to the hospital. He ended up getting stitches and glue (shown below) which has since been completely healed.
